Disney’s THE BFG spoiler-free movie review and printables

Looking for a fun and entertaining movie to take the tween in your life to see this summer? Check out Disney’s latest film THE BFG!

We love to go to the movies but often find there’s nothing appropriate for a 9 year old. One of the challenges in raising a tween is finding good family oriented entertainment. Too old for “babyish” movies, many of the movies our son and his friends want to see have mature themes with too much violence and foul language. It’s always refreshing to find a film that doesn’t resort to those extremes and appeals to older kids and adults alike.

We found a perfect balance of family friendly entertainment, action, and a beautifully told story in Disney’s THE BFG. Directed by Steven Spielberg, it feels like the very best of what we love about the classic Disney movies and his movie ET all in one gorgeous and magical film.

Based on the children’s classic book by Roald Dahl, THE BFG tells the story of Sophie (played by the talented Ruby Barnhill), a curious and adventurous girl and her giant new friend The BFG. The BFG, short for The Big Friendly Giant, is beautifully played by Mark Rylance. Watching their friendship grow as they work together to solve problems and overcome obstacles is so heartwarming. They make a fantastic team!

The film takes you through all of their adventures on a rollercoaster of emotions and excitement.
Watching the movie felt seamless between the live action and special effects – simply amazing!

Fans of Downton Abbey will love seeing Penelope Wilton as The Queen of England. Here’s a fun clip from their visit to Buckingham Palace.

At 1 hour and 57 minutes, it’s absolutely worth seeing in 3D. We saw it with our son and 13 year old friend. After the movie, we all laughed and talked about the funny parts on the way home. It was definitely entertaining for older kids and adults alike. It’s a must see!

Here are some beautifully illustrated bookmarks with fun vocabulary words for fans of both The BFG book and movie

Our family is really looking forward to seeing the new Walt Disney Studios movie THE BFG. Comcast Foundation education initiatives in Portland and nationwide

Helping kids and giving back to the community is very important to our family and our values. We appreciate companies who share those same civic minded ideals. Recently I learned about Comcast’s education initiatives. They are active in the schools as a company to provide everything from school supplies for low income families to technology to help kids learn and succeed. Comcast and their employees care about and invest their time in Portland and its youth.

One of the beneficial programs I learned about is their Schoolhouse Supplies’ Tools for Schools program. Comcast and its employees adopted Cesar Chavez and Faubion Schools. Both Portland schools are considered high needs for grades K-8.

Comcast employees were hard at work filling 1000 brand new backpacks with school supplies from notebooks to pencils and more. Each student was given a backpack with supplies to start of the school year with the vital tools they needed to learn. Comcast also donated one laptop to one student per grade level at both schools. What a fantastic way to help out kids in need!

Technology is so important for kids and families to do schoolwork and stay connected. Another way Comcast helps is by providing low cost internet service to qualified families through their Internet Essentials program. Over 15,000 Oregon and SW Washington low income families receive their internet service for just $9.95 a month and receive a free Wi-fi router. Nationally, more than 600,000 families stay connected with Internet Essentials.

Through their community efforts, Comcast shows that they believe in and invest in Portland and its citizens.  Nationwide, they are doing great things too. Last year the Comcast Foundation invested $4.5 million through grants and contributions, public service announcements, Comcast Newsmakers, appearances, scholarships, Cable in the Classroom programs, and the Beyond the School Walls mentoring program.
